Shelves for greenhouse

Recopilación: Shelves for greenhouse

Greenhouse shelving lifts pots and trays off the floor, freeing ground space and improving airflow around plants. Wall mounted rails fix to the glazing bars, while freestanding units stand independently. Check the frame profile first, as fixings differ by make.

More about Shelves for greenhouse

Using Vertical Space

Greenhouse shelving lifts pots and trays off the floor, which does three things at once: it frees the ground for beds or storage, it brings plants closer to the glass and the light, and it improves airflow around each pot.

That last point is the one most often overlooked. Pots standing on a cold floor sit in still, damp air, which is exactly the condition botrytis and damping off need. Lifting them onto a shelf removes it.

Wall Mounted or Freestanding

Wall mounted rails fix directly to the glazing bars and take no floor space at all, which makes them the efficient choice in a small house. The catch is that fixings differ between frame makes, so check your profile before ordering.

Freestanding units stand independently and can be moved or taken out entirely. They suit rented structures, houses where you do not want to fix to the frame, and layouts that change through the year.

  • Mesh and slatted shelves drain freely and let air move under each pot.
  • Solid shelves suit stored items rather than growing plants.
  • Adjustable heights matter, since plants outgrow a fixed gap quickly.

Load and Material

Check the stated load before filling a shelf with wet containers. A full ten litre pot weighs considerably more than most people estimate, and a run of them across a shelf adds up fast.

Aluminium copes most reliably with greenhouse humidity and needs nothing doing to it. Treated timber looks warmer and is easier to modify. Untreated softwood will not last a season of daily watering.

Placement and Shade

Shelving casts shade on whatever sits beneath it, which is fine for storage and a problem for plants. In a small house, a full height run of shelving along the sunny side can darken the bed opposite more than expected.

Put shelving on the shaded side where you can, keeping the sunny side for growing. Where light is short anyway, supplementary lighting under a shelf is a practical fix.

Shelving or Staging

Shelving holds things above working level. Staging is a tiered bench at working height, built for plants rather than storage. Most houses use both: staging along one side for propagation, shelving above it for pots and trays.

For a dedicated working surface, a greenhouse bench or potting table does the job better than either.
